Château de St-Cosme Gigondas cuvée classique

Louis Barruol, a great winemaker, passionate and talented. He is sometimes referred to as one of the " superstars "of the Rhone Valley. His work is always very serious, carried out with great expertise, even on his classic AOC Gigondas cuvée. He often overcomes more difficult vintages, such as 2008, a bad year for the AOC, but not for him. This traditional cuvée is fabulous, and has an astonishing ageing capacity for a classic cuvée: around 10-15 years. Vinification is a blend of modern and traditional techniques, with the wines never destemmed but aged in barrels. This cuvée is composed mainly of Grenache, with around 1/3 Mourvèdre and the remainder Syrah and Cinsault.

94/100 Robert Parker
The Gigondas 2010 (60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah) is a superb effort from Les Barruols: rich, revealing a dense purple color and lots of blueberry, black raspberry and cassis notes interwoven with hints of wood shavings, pencil, lead, truffles and spring flowers. Full-bodied, opulent and sumptuous.
This year, 2010, should develop for a decade or more.
TOP 2: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas cuvée classique 2007
93/100 Robert Parker
Gigondas 2007 has a dense purple color. A gorgeous bouquet of charcoal, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, flavors of acacia flowers, and a hint of chalk. Full-bodied, with terrific fruit intensity, full-bodied texture, magnificent freshness and acids that provide a well-defined personality to this superb Gigondas. The overall impression is one of elegance and purity.
Take advantage now until 2021.

This 2015 vintage of Barruol's Gigondas Classique, with a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and the rest Syrah and Cinsault, will be a wine that enthusiasts will want to stockpile. Full-bodied, rich, nicely textured, voluminous, with notes of crème de cassis, white pepper, spices and garrigue. This is a classic Gigondas that will drink well for 15 years.
TOP 4: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas cuvée classique 2012
92/100 Robert Parker
Another great traditional cuvée, the Gigondas 2012 shows the house style with its salty black fruits, notes of ground herbs, pepper and minerals as the bouquet. Medium- to full-bodied, voluptuous and beautifully textured.
It can be drunk now or cellared until 2024.
TOP 5: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas cuvée classique 2011
91/100 Robert Parker
A very serious Gigondas 2011, which reveals much of the class and richness found in the superior cuvées. It offers toasty, spicy, blackberry, pepper and charcuterie notes. Full-bodied, textured with remarkable freshness and soft tannins. It will shine for more than a decade and will be an excellent value.

90/100 Robert Parker
This classic Gigondas from the 2014 vintage is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and the rest Syrah with a small touch of Cinsault. It's a stunning medium-bodied wine, balanced and impressive, offering fantastic notes of ripe red and black fruits, olive tapenade and pepper flavors.
It will keep until around 2024.
Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le Claux

This cuvée represents 1.8 ha of vines that should have been uprooted in 1914. They must have been very old at the time. With the winegrowers away at war, the vines were spared. In the post-war period, the winegrower's family decided to remain in charge of the vines in order to earn their living. Clay and limestone marl soils, with sharp gravel on the surface, give birth to a wine that could be described as a Gigondas in the very image of a Burgundian wine, with its finesse and complexity.

97-99/100 Robert Parker
A wine that could flirt with perfection. With 100% of Grenache, this Gigondas comes from the terroir just across the road from the Hominis Fides cuvée. The soils here are slightly limestone-based, and like all the wines here, it is fermented without destemming and is kept mainly in old barrels (20% of new ones). Camphor, currants, incense, graphite, crushed stone and licorice. Flavors soar as soon as they hit the palate. Full-bodied richness, incredible texture and a surprising finish.
You'll need to wait 2-3 years before enjoying it.
TOP 2: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le Claux" 2010
98/100 Robert Parker
Opaque ruby/purple-tinted, extra-concentrated, this Gigondas Le Claux 2010 (150 cases produced) displays subtle notes of earth, black fruit and flowers. A great wine, opulent, full-bodied on the palate, with good acidity and a certain structure that is reflected in the tannins on the finish.
It will keep for 15-20 years.
TOP 3: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le Claux" 2007
98/100 Robert Parker
One of the best wines of the 2007 vintage for the Southern Rhône. Gigondas Le Claux 2007 is a magnificently perfumed, straightforward and complex wine. Totally transparent, with notes of garrigue, complex, spring flower flavors, dry-aged beef, black raspberries, blackcurrant aromas, this beauty is full-bodied, pure and incredibly precise. But at the same time, you'll notice its layers, it's a voluptuous wine. It still has plenty of tannin and is not yet fully mature (February 2017), but I'd be happy to drink it over the next decade or so.
Drink up to 2032.
TOP 4: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le Claux" 2012
96/100 Robert Parker
Gigondas Le Claux 2012, one of my favorites. It has lovely minerality and notes of black fruits, smoky herbs, graphite and violets. A great, full-bodied Gigondas. Discreet tannins and a superb finish that remains concentrated.
Give it a few years and enjoy the tasting, until 2032.
TOP 5: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le Claux" 2011
96/100 Robert Parker
Full-bodied, textured, the Gigondas Le Claux 2011 has magnificent notes of lavender, incense, dried underbrush and floral hints, as well as a finish with black raspberry and black cherry pits. Very well-built, structured, with loads of fruit, fine tannins and excellent freshness overall.
It can be enjoyed at any time over the next decade or more.
94/100 Robert Parker
One of the best wines of the 2014 vintage in AOC Gigondas. A ruby, semi-transparent color to go with a Pinot bouquet that gives notes of camphor, sweet flavors of cherries, dried flowers, forest floor and lots of minerality. Rich, medium-bodied and with a mid-palate that offers terrific floral flavors.
It will have a lifespan of at least 8-10 years.
Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Valbelle

The Gigondas Valbelle cuvée was launched in 1993. Valbelle comes from sand and limestone soils. These are wines for laying down, in a fruity style. This cuvée produces elegant, concentrated wines. The Barruol family can be proud of this great Gigondas cuvée.

TOP 1: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Valbelle" 2010
96/100 Robert Parker
One of the most profound wines of its time, Valbelle 2010 boasts an opaque purple color, as well as notes of black raspberry, crème de cassis, incense, forest floor, spring flowers and subtle undergrowth. There's even a hint of black truffles in this complexity. Full-bodied, neither light nor heavy, this is a brilliant example of Gigondas that should drink well for 15 years.
Drink up to 2027
94-96/100 Robert Parker
Grenache dominates this Gigondas Cuvee Valbelle 2015. This is another heavenly wine from Louis Barruol. Full-bodied, transparent and elegant, with lots of crème de cassis, crushed flowers, incense and white pepper. It has a shallower mid-palate touch than the single vines, but is impeccably balanced and will have two decades of longevity.
TOP 3: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Valbelle" 2007
95/100 Robert Parker
The nose of this 2007 vintage offers superb black fruits, ground herbs, peppery meat and tapenade flavors. A stacked mid-palate, full-bodied richness, and tobacco flavors on the finish. This is an incredible Gigondas and can be enjoyed anytime over the next 10-15 years.
Drink now through to 2030.
TOP 4: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Valbelle" 2005
95/100 Robert Parker
Deep and richer than the classic Gigondas cuvée, Grenache dominates Gigondas Cuvee Valbelle 2005 and offers an incredible bouquet of cassis, charcoal, licorice, gingerbread and grilled meats. Made from 10% Syrah, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated on the palate, with a smoky mid-palate, gorgeous fruit flavors and a great finish. This one is every bit as good as the 2005 Hominis Fides and should drink well for another decade.
Drink now through to 2025.
TOP 5: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Valbelle" 2012
94/100 Robert Parker
A more limited production for this Gigondas Cuvee Valbelle 2012 (which comes from a blend of terroirs). It has fabulous notes of blackcurrant, cocoa, meat, dried herbs, soy sauce and Asian flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, deep, concentrated and structured. A powerful Gigondas with 15 years of evolution.
Drink now through 2029.
TOP 6: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Valbelle" 1998
94/100 Robert Parker
Rather reticent on the nose, with notes of very ripe fruit, there are flavors of blackberry, pepper, dried flowers and beef. It hits the palate and you notice its richness. Full-bodied, with good density and a savory finish. Fully mature, but still young and full of life.
Drink over the next 2-3 years (2019).
Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Hominis Fides

Like its brother, Gigondas "Le Claux", this cuvée dates back to 1902. It is one of the oldest vines on the estate. Composed of non-stony sandy limestone soils, derived from Helvetian safre dating back some 14 million years. These wines have a superb texture on the palate. The tannins are highly atypical. You'll notice both power and tenderness in these wines. This is Saint-Cosme's deepest Gigondas, and also its most enigmatic.

TOP 1: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Hominis Fides" 2010
100/100 Robert Parker
Pure perfection, this Gigondas Hominis Fides 2010 has astonishing richness, an extraordinary, room-filling bouquet of red, black and blue fruits intermixed with charcoal, subtle notes of new oak, forest floor and a real spice box. Massive and rich on the palate. Its delicacy and subtlety belie its stature, weight, precision and character.
Drink now until 2034.
TOP 2: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Hominis Fides" 2007
100/100 Robert Parker
I've been lucky enough to drink many bottles of Gigondas Hominis Fides 2007 and it has been incredibly consistent for me. It's certainly the greatest Gigondas I've ever tasted and perhaps the greatest Gigondas ever made. A heavenly bouquet of garrigue, graphite, crushed rocks, licorice and assorted red and black fruits. This beauty strikes the palate with full-bodied richness and a deep homogeneity that lifts its richness and depth. It has soft tannins and rich fruit. Hats off to winemaker Louis Barruol for this incredible wine!
Drink now through 2037.
97-99/100 Robert Parker
A wine that could rival the Gigondas Hominis Fides 2007 and 2015. (100% Grenache from sandy soils). It offers full-bodied, massive and unctuous notes of redcurrants, crushed rocks, smoked meats and licorice. This sensational Gigondas could be the vintage wine of the entire Southern Rhône Valley! It has masses of tannin and will require patience before tasting.
To be cellared for the time being.
TOP 4: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Hominis Fides" 2011
97/100 Robert Parker
The richest, most textured of the appellation's 2011s. Notes of raspberry, black fruit, forest floor and exotic spices. Floral flavors, crushed flowers and dusty minerality. Silky and elegant, with fantastic concentration, polished tannins and rock-star length. Certainly one of the greatest wines of the vintage (and I'm going to include the whole of the Southern Rhône in this comparison).
Drink now through 2031.
TOP 5: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Hominis Fides" 2012
95/100 Robert Parker
The 2012 Gigondas Hominis Fides has developed its potential remarkably since I tasted it in 2015. It's elegant, now much more focused on its finesse, boasting superb notes of crushed rocks, dried underbrush, blackberry liqueur and pepper. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins.
Enjoy this "rock star" for the next 10-15 years (2029).
TOP 6: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Hominis Fides" 2006
95/100 Robert Parker
A bigger, richer wine than the Gigondas "Le Poste" of the same vintage. It offers more sandy, loamy soil notes, as well as hints of saltiness, licorice, blackcurrant and tapenade. Medium- to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, with tannins still present. It will be one of the wines with the greatest cellaring potential in this vintage, and will celebrate its 20th anniversary in fine form.
Drink now through 2026.
Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le poste" (The post office)

The vines for "Le Poste" are located next to the Chapelle de Saint-Cosme. There are 4 grape varieties, including 3 Grenache and one Clairette. In 1963, the vines were replanted thanks to Henri Barruol. A quality recognized and appreciated by all. It has a powerful, flinty taste and is described as sappy. It has been described as the estate's most feminine wine.

It offers an aromatic assortment of scents, and hits the palate with a full-bodied, thunderous mouthfeel revealing plenty of texture and a superb finish. The expertise of a great winemaker.
To be cellared for the time being.
TOP 2: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le poste" 2007
97/100 Robert Parker
The most elegant and complex of this unique vineyard, Gigondas le Poste 2007 (100% Grenache) reveals a ruby/purple color, to go with notes of crushed flowers, olives, charcuterie and spices. This full-bodied beauty, with ultra-fine, even transparent tannins, has impeccable overall balance and a sensational finish.

TOP 3: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le poste" 2012
96/100 Robert Parker
Like the Hominis Fides, the Gigondas Le Poste 2012 is elegant, transparent and silky, yet retains its power, richness and superb length. The fruit is sweet, black and blue. There are hints of violets, undergrowth, tar and chocolate. Full-bodied, with serious concentration on the mid-palate. Full-bodied, but with silky tannins that frame the finish. It's already drinkable, but will have at least 20 years of longevity.
Drink now until 2034.
TOP 4: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le poste" 2011
96/100 Robert Parker
The 2011 vintage of the Gigondas Le Poste cuvée has great finesse, with discreet elegance and a freshness that reveals itself over time in the glass. Raspberry, violet, forest floor. One could imagine flowers resting in the glass to get an idea of the mouthfeel. This full-bodied beauty, supple and elegant, never gives any nasty surprises. A vintage that wasn't easy, but which gives birth to a superb wine. A superb effort on the part of the winemaker.
Enjoy it for the next 15-20 years (2028).
94-96/100 Robert Parker
The 2015 Gigondas cuvée "Le poste" is a classic expression of this vineyard, and it's the more elegant side that stands out. A fragrant style that always comes from this terroir. Violets, floral notes, raspberries, blueberries and green herbs. A full-bodied, long, perfectly balanced Gigondas with ultra-fine tannins and perfectly integrated acidity.
This beauty will be better in its youth, but I think it will evolve favorably as it ages.
TOP 6: Château de St-Cosme Gigondas "Le poste" 2014
94/100 Robert Parker
I absolutely loved the 2014 Gigondas cuvée "Le poste", and I'm sure it will be a success. It has a magnificent perfume of lavender, petals, black raspberries and spring roses. This terroir produces a supple, full-bodied Gigondas. Beautiful purity, fine, polished tannins and a great finish. Enjoy this elegant beauty anytime over the next decade (until 2026).
